Before we get into this let’s let the Urban Dictionary help us out with definitions:
A picture taken of yourself that is planned to be uploaded to Facebook, Myspace or any other sort of social networking website. You can usually see the person's arm holding out the camera… A selfie is usually accompanied by a kissy face or the individual looking in a direction that is not towards the camera.
"Outfit Of the Day"
Usually used on fashion blogs, or other places where people show others that they are wearing or have worn.
Ok, now that we have that straight, what would we class a picture taken by ones self in the mirror? Is this a selfie? What about when we get someone else to take a photo of our outfit for the purpose of #ootd? Is this a selfie? Ok how about when we take a photo of something that we are wearing/doing e.g. our legs or our handbag or exercising but the photo doesn’t actually include ones face? Selfie? Regardless of what you think, I think that all of these pictures tend to serve the same purpose as a selfie.
To me, that purpose is to say to people; “hey, look at me” followed by any of the following: “I look good today”/”I love my outfit today”/”I have worked so hard on my body recently” and then “check it out”. I think that it is in our nature to think of this as arrogance, I think we should instead think of this as confidence and I think that we should think that this is GREAT.
In a world where we bombarded everyday with intensely airbrushed images it is refreshing to know that there are a lot of girls who have the confidence to put themselves out there with real images of themselves; their faces, their bodies, their outfits. And so what if we make ourselves look a little more glowing with filters. It’s still more real than a magazine.
I think that this is why instagram is such a hit – It allows real girls to look at an image and think, that girl is real, that body, that face, that outfit is real and that is ascertainable for me. It allows people to be inspired - From trying out a new trend, to getting fit. If you look at the instagram accounts with the most followers (and I’m not talking about the celebs or models here) you will usually see that they are the ones that aren’t afraid of #selfie or #ootd.
So to those confident selfie takers out there – To you I say keep doing what you’re doing. I hope I can become as confident as you. No more #sorrynotsorry.
(And just to keep with the theme - Every photo in this post is from an instagram account. #OOTD)
