Resident Sydneysider (and one of my oldest and dearest) Belinda Craigie gives us the low-down on what's good when in Sydney. Enjoy!
In the city...
El Loco, Surry Hills – for something cheap and cheerful, try chef Dan Hong’s Mexican-inspired eatery in Surry Hills. Bonus points for the margarita jugs and cocktail selection. And the churros. Must try: the ‘secret’ taco. Don’t ask what’s in it, just trust that it’ll be delectable. merivale.com.au/elloco
Mary’s, Newtown – For the best burger you’ll probably ever eat. Must try: the cheeseburger. Such simple, much good. instagram.com/marysnewtown
The Grounds of Alexandria, Alexandria – while you’ll most likely wait a while to be seated, there’s plenty to entertain; from stalls selling tiramisu in a jar and ice cream-filled croissants; to homemade candles and resident pig Kevin Bacon. thegrounds.com.au
Outside the city...
Jonah’s at Whale Beach - This boutique hotel in Palm Beach is a dining destination in its own right. Make it a day trip and take a leisurely drive up the coast, or if you’re feeling flush, you might like to take a scenic seaplane over the city and Northern beaches of Sydney.
Must try: The baked gnocchi with asparagus, gorgonzola piccante, manuka honey, sourdough crumbs. jonahs.com.au
Corridor, Newtown – Snuggle up in Newtown’s most intimate bar, with a decent tapas menu for when the hunger pangs start. corridorbar.com.au
Coogee Pavilion, Coogee Beach – Soak up the last of the summer sunshine at this beachfront establishment. merivale.com.au/coogeepavilion
The Norfolk, Redfern – eccentric décor and cheap beer means the good times are aplenty at this Cleveland Street pub. thenorfolk.co
Luxe Sydney really brings the love. You can find them in Newtown, Woollahra and Bondi Junction. luxesydney.com.au
Bourke Street Bakery, Surry Hills – the coffee is good and the pastries are even better at this Sydney institution. Combine the two and you’ll be a very happy chappy. bourkestreetbakery.com.au
For designer threads, wander the streets of Paddington, where most Australian designers have their flagship stores.
If vintage or pre-owned is more your style, head to the weekend markets at Rozelle to collect some gems for the wardrobe.
Pier One – chic accommodation with a top-notch restaurant and views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. pieronesydneyharbour.com.au
